ABOUT  ISUL

Isul and her big rescue dog Gus

ISUL KIM

Isul is the proud daughter of Korean immigrants, whose sacrifice and courage afforded her a life of freedom of choice, expression, and opportunity, which she has dedicated to serving marginalized communities and social justice causes. Born and raised in New York City, Isul crossed the country and has been a resident for over twenty years in the majestic state of California.

Storytelling and creative arts therapy have been a personal throughline in her lifelong healing, beginning in her childhood, an early start to navigating life as trauma survivor. As a teenager, she was fortunate to have access to trauma-informed creative healing resources to let her explore craft and expression through numerous mediums - painting, collage, film photography, drawing and illustration, instrumental and vocal music, pottery, theater, and graphic design. In her twenties, Isul told stories as a singer-songwriter and band frontwoman. In this creative space, she discovered the power of speaking her truth and focused her lyrics and words on firsthand, lived experiences.

As a recent kidney transplant survivor and thriver, she is now telling her story of the harrowing yet triumphant health journey that brought her to where she is today. Isul writes this (loosely) chronological collection of stories, entitled "D is for...". Each story aims to be a healthy mix of memoir, information, self-help, narrative, motivation, truth and vulnerability. Most of all, her greatest hope is to help others in their journeys back to health and forward in life. She sends this message:

"To all those fighting for their lives against trauma or chronic and end-stage kidney disease: First and foremost, find yourself. Then, find your tribe. You will need both. And if you can’t find either – you can find me. I gotchu."

Isul holds a B.A. in Sociology from Harvard, and is a passionate home chef, whose culinary philosophy is "every dish, a story". She is a lover of and mama to large rescue dogs. She writes to you from the beautiful, tranquil and magical desert of Wonder Valley, CA.
